James Pearce says Liverpool believe they’re about to make a serious bargain signing
Liverpool look like they could be closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is reportedly set to join the Reds in a deal worth £30m.
This is a move that has raised some eyebrows, it has to be said.
Mamardashvili is a quality goalkeeper, but with both Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher on the books at Anfield, this move does seem to be a little bit left-field.
However, speaking on the , James Pearce has shared an update on Mamardashvili and why Liverpool are going for the Valencia star.
According to Pearce, Liverpool view this signing as a long-term succession plan, claiming that the Reds are viewing this is a bargain signing, believing that Mamardashvili is undervalued on the market.

How Liverpool view Giorgi Mamardashvili
Pearce shared what he knows about the potential incoming Liverpool goalkeeper.
“It has been explained to me as long-term succession planning, Liverpool rate this guy incredibly highly and they believe he is on the market for a price that undervalues him. They think it is a good long-term investment to loan him out and bring him in at a later point,” Pearce said.
Mamardashvili could be a bargain
Liverpool believe that Mamardashvili could be a bargain, and they may not be wrong.
Mamardashvili was apparently the best goalkeeper in La Liga last season, and £30m for a player of that ability is a great price.
Of course, he doesn’t necessarily fit into the team right now, but the plan is to loan him out and bring him back into the mix in another year or two.
Chelsea used this exact strategy when they were grooming Thibaut Courtois to be Petr Cech’s replacement at Stamford Bridge, and Liverpool appear to be doing the exact same thing with Mamardashvili and Alisson.
This could end up being an inspired signing, even if it takes a while for Mamardashvili to actually make an impact at Anfield.
