James McCarthy could get unlikely lifeline at Everton if Idrissa Gueye exits

Everton need to have a plan in action if they lose midfielder Idrissa Gueye and it doesn’t look like they will have much time to sign a replacement if he exits.

, Manchester City are Arsenal are interested in the 29-year-old enforcer.

It is also understood that the Senegal international has written to the Toffees official pleading them to sanction a move to Paris Saint-Germain, who made a £21.5million bid for him on Sunday.

The Merseyside club should look to keep the central midfielder at least until the summer if they can, but if he does depart life will go on under Marco Silva.

Gueye would leave behind a huge gap in the centre of the park, where he provides brilliant defensive cover and immense work-rate.

Everton may find the solution to his potential exit in the form of James McCarthy, who has been a forgotten man during his long injury layout.

McCarthy has not made a senior appearance this season, but did return to the bench on Tuesday night for the 1-0 away win over Huddersfield Town.

The 28-year-old is recently back from injury and should be pushing for a first-team return.

It may take time for the Republic of Ireland international to get up to full speed, but he has shown in the past he can be a no-nonsense enforcer at Goodiosn Park when on form

Everton may need a short-term fix for the second half of the season and McCarthy may be that surprise answer.
