After the game, goalscorer James Maddison heaped praise on two Tottenham youngsters.
What James Maddison told Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall after Tottenham beat Hoffenheim
Tottenham’s injury issues have really troubled them this season.
Ange Postecoglou has had to do without several key players over the last few months, and that has forced him to use young players in almost every game.
Archie Gray has become a key member of Tottenham’s side in recent months, while Lucas Bergvall has climbed up the pecking order to become a regular as well now.
The two teenagers have played a lot of football for their age this season, and they were very, very good again in Germany against Hoffenheim on Thursday night.
Maddison was delighted with Gray and Bergvall’s performance and revealed what he told them in the dressing room after the game.
He told TNT Sports: “We have got two 18-year-olds in Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall just churning out 90 minutes after 90 minutes, because of the injury situation we’re in, which I don’t want to keep blabbing on about but it is real at the minute, it is happening, we do have about 11 fit senior players.
“And they are being asked to do so much. In the end, Lucas chasing down the keeper in the 93rd minute when he is dead on his feet, Archie winning duels in the bottom corner, stopping crosses coming in.
“We’re asking so much of them. I said to them both in there I’m just really proud of them.”
The one massive positive for Tottenham despite injuries
Tottenham are 15th in the Premier League table right now, which is simply not good enough.
Postecoglou’s tactics can definitely be questioned, but everyone has to agree that injuries have played a massive part in their results.
That has been hard to watch, but the biggest positive from the injuries has been the chances that Gray and Bergvall have got in the first team.
The youngsters wouldn’t have played as many games as they have if everyone else was fit. They have had to step in and it has to be said that they have both delivered.
That is a huge positive for Tottenham, and this experience will help them massively in their development.
