James Maddison says ‘outstanding’ Tottenham teammate was the real difference maker vs Man United
James Maddison looked delighted to be front and centre of Tottenham Hotspur’s much needed win over Manchester United in the Premier League.
Maddison was criticised by Roy Keane this week who declared that the Tottenham midfielder wouldn’t be the player to change things once he returned from injury.
However, it was the England international who reacted first when Andre Onana pushed Lucas Bergvall’s shot into a dangerous area.
And despite Man United’s best attempts, the likes of Alejandro Garnacho weren’t able to get Ruben Amorim’s depleted side level.
It was a rare occasion that Tottenham were able to turn to their bench to strengthen their chances of winning whilst their opposition were almost restricted to their starting eleven.
And in truth, Amorim’s side probably deserved some credit for how they battled given the circumstances.
James Maddison praises Guglielmo Vicario for being Tottenham’s difference maker
Putting the focus back on Spurs, Maddison spoke to after the game for an extended period, seemingly referencing Keane’s comments at one stage without naming him.
And amongst the chat, Maddison had some praise for Italian teammate Guglielmo Vicario who was extremely assured on his return to goal for Tottenham.

Maddison spoke about how those returning from injury can take the pressure off of players who have been playing week in, week out and Vicario certainly did do that for young Antonin Kinsky.
Maddison said: “It’s nice to be an injured player coming back, I know I didn’t have too much time out, only a couple of weeks, but to take the pressure off them and give them a rest, give the other lads a boost.
“I thought Vicario was outstanding as well, made a difference coming back in.
“So it’s about us being present now and leading like they did, even amongst a bad run they were still there, they were still present, recovering, they were still living right to try and give us the best chance of winning – we had a bit of a bad run of form, but there’s obviously factors to that.
“It’s nice to be back and add a bit of a bolster to a squad with some injuries and see some happy faces.”
Vicario proves his worth on injury return
It has to be said that Vicario looked very confident on his return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Vicario has always been a great shotstopper and a goalkeeper who can cope with the ball at his feet, but his presence at set-pieces has sometimes been alarming.
That being said, the Italian dealt with United’s deliveries into his box superbly, and saved well from the likes of Garnacho once or twice.
Kinsky hasn’t been poor by any means, but Vicario proved why he’s Tottenham’s number one.
An excellent result for Spurs, even if they still have a lot of progress to make as they continue to recover players from injury.
