Jack Wilshere says player who left Arsenal in 2018 was simply ‘unbelievable’

Jack Wilshere played alongside some exceptional players during his 17-year spell at Arsenal.

The midfielder joined the Hale End Academy set-up back in 2001 and broke into the first team seven years later aged just 16.

It meant that Jack Wilshere lined up alongside the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie, as well as Mesut Ozil towards the end of his career.

But one man who arrived at the Emirates Stadium when Arsenal arguably needed a player of that quality the most was Santi Cazorla.

The Spaniard arrived in the summer of 2012 after the Gunners had lost a couple of key players in Van Persie and Samir Nasri beforehand.

Wilshere has been discussing the changes to personnel during that period at Arsenal and lauded Cazorla.

Wilshere on ‘unbelievable’ Cazorla

Speaking on , Wilshere was quizzed on Arsenal losing key players between 2011 and 2012.

He said: “Cazorla had come in, Mikel had come in…”

“He was a good player by the way, Cazorla,” Simon Jordan added.

“Oh, he was unbelievable,” Wilshere agreed. “So, while we were losing big personalities and big players for the team, we also replaced them.

“I felt a weird sense of leadership there as well, I was only 20.”

Wilshere certainly isn’t the first former Arsenal star to heap praise on Cazorla.

Aaron Ramsey recently claimed the Spaniard just ‘oozed class’ and Alex Iwobi has labelled him the best he’s ever played with during his time in north London.

Cazorla’s injury

Cazorla enjoyed a brilliant six years at Arsenal before leaving the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2018.

The midfielder scooped two FA Cups during his time at the Emirates and racked up 180 appearances for the Gunners, netting 29 times.

But he suffered a disappointing end to his Arsenal career after picking up an Achilles injury in October 2016. It ultimately meant that Cazorla didn’t play for the north London club during his last 18 months at the club.

Nevertheless, the 39-year-old is still going strong in Spain and is currently playing his football with La Liga 2 outfit Real Oviedo.
