Jack Whatmough should pick Rangers over Celtic and replace Joe Worrall

Rangers and Celtic are both chasing Portsmouth defender Jack Whatmough, .

With less than six months remaining on his Portsmouth contract, Whatmough could be weighing up his options in the summer.

The young defender has been a rock at the back for Pompey this season, forming a strong partnership with Matt Clarke after wrestling his place back from Christian Burgess.

But he could be lured to the Scottish Premiership with the Old Firm going head-to-head in this transfer battle.

Whatmough will be available for a compensation fee in the summer but who should he choose if he receives offers from Celtic and Rangers?

The 22-year-old must weigh up his chances of success against his game time.

And on balance of these factors, a move to Rangers would be a better option for him at this stage of his career.

Gareth McAuley is 39 now and entering the final stages of his career, while Joe Worrall’s loan from Nottingham Forest expires next summer.

Whatmough would find more first-team chances more readily available at Ibrox under Steven Gerrard.

And the England under-19 international could play a crucial role in helping Rangers get back to the top of Scotland.

Despite his young age, Whatmough has already played just shy of 100 senior games for Pompey and that is with a couple of long-term injuries.

Whatmough is clearly a very promising defender who could take Rangers to the next level if he chooses them ahead of Celtic.
