Jack Clarke shines on Sunderland debut after Spurs exit
Tottenham Hotspur fans would have been forgiven for keeping an eye on Jack Clarke as the winger made his second Sunderland debut on Sunday following his permanent move in the summer.
Clarke left Spurs in this window after a disappointing time in North London. Much was expected of the winger when he joined from Leeds. However, the 21-year-old left having not made a single appearance in the Premier League.
Clarke ended his Tottenham spell on a high, helping Sunderland reach the Championship while on loan. And that prompted the Black Cats to bring him back, this time on a permanent basis.
Clarke is not a stranger to the second tier. And actually, he seemed to pick up where he left off when he left Leeds originally on Sunday as Alex Neil’s side faced Coventry City in their opening game.
Ultimately, the points were shared at the Stadium of Light. But it was Clarke who proved to be the star of the show.
The youngster broke the deadlock during the first-half. And he proved to be a real livewire all afternoon.
In fact, no Sunderland player received a higher rating from the than Clarke. He was given an 8/10. And it was suggested that he was the biggest threat.
“Scored the goal, could have scored a second, and was Sunderland’s most dangerous attacking weapon,” they wrote.
Meanwhile, the labelled his display ‘terrific’ and his goal ‘brilliant’.

Obviously, Clarke’s form at Sunderland is unlikely to lead to Tottenham fans questioning whether they made the right call to let him go. Unfortunately, it just seemed to be the wrong move for the starlet.
You would imagine that Spurs have some potentially lucrative clauses included in the deal with Sunderland. So really, it is only good news for Tottenham if Clarke does now get his development back on track.
