Jack Clarke compares Leeds United teammate to Wayne Rooney
Jack Clarke has jokingly compared Leeds United teenager Ryan Edmondson to Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney on Instagram, after the Under-23’s won the Professional Development League North.
Carlos Corberan’s side have dominated the league throughout the campaign. Marcelo Bielsa’s usage of the reserves has seen plenty of first-team players drop down for game time, and many Under-23’s promoted.
Clarke, Leif Davis, Jamie Shackleton and Robbie Gotts are major parts of the Under-23 side, but they continue to be picked for the senior outfit too. That is down to Bielsa studying the second string with a fine toothpick.
Leeds had to beat Colchester to win the title on Monday night and Edmondson scored an excellent brace to help Leeds win 2-0. Edmondson posted on Instagram after the match, and Clarke tagged Rooney in the comments.
TBR’s view
Edmondson took his tally to 15 goals for the Under-23’s this season, an incredible effort given that the powerful forward is still only 17 years of age – and suffered an injury earlier in the season that kept him out for some time.
Certainly similar to Rooney in physical stature, Edmondson has plenty of work to do if he is to ever embody the former England captain. But he is certainly showing enormous promise and signs that he will become a top player.
Edmondson is behind both Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford in the pecking order, but he may be considered third choice with Tyler Roberts impressing in midfield.
