Jack Clarke and Eddie Nketiah score for England youth teams to keep Leeds attackers on their toes
Leeds United face Barnsley this Sunday as they look to bounce back in the Championship after the international break. And two young players have given Marcelo Bielsa some food for thought ahead of the game.
Jack Clarke and Eddie Nketiah have both been playing for England’s youth teams and impressing. Leeds’ starting attackers will be on their toes as Clarke and Nketiah aim to take their good international form into the domestic game.
Clarke and Nketiah score
Leeds academy starlet Clarke, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, was playing for England U20s. The 18-year-old winger was on hand to score a stoppage-time winner as the Young Lions beat Switzerland 1-0.
Meanwhile, Nketiah excelled in a centre-forward role for England’s U21 side. The 20-year-old, on loan from Arsenal, scored twice in England’s 3-2 win over Turkey over the break.
Nketiah pushes Bamford
Nketiah has been pushing Bamford all the way for a start this season. So far, he has been a substitute in three games in the Championship, scoring once. He has also scored twice in two EFL Cup games.
The Arsenal starlet has three goals in 226 minutes, which is an impressive feat for a new player. Patrick Bamford has been in good goalscoring form but any blip in his form will surely see Nketiah promoted.
Clarke faces tougher task
Clarke has not yet made a matchday squad due to the restrictions on loan players. He signed for Spurs in the summer and returned to Leeds on loan but Jack Harrison has been preferred to him.
Championship clubs can only have five loanees in a matchday squad. With Harrison, Helder Costa, Ilan Meslier, Ben White and Nketiah, Clarke has been missing out. His goal for England U20s is a timely reminder of his abilities but he needs to replace one of the loanees.
