‘I’ve never seen him’… Pundit says 23-year-old just put in his best ever performance for Chelsea vs Man City

Robbie Mustoe has shared what he noticed about the performance of Enzo Fernandez which amazed him as Chelsea drew with Manchester City on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s side picked up a huge result at the Etihad Stadium as they look to turn a corner after a disappointing first-half of the season. The Premier League champions needed a late goal to avoid defeat against the Blues.

There were outstanding displays all over the pitch. Speaking on podcast, Robbie Mustoe suggested that Chelsea have a future star in Malo Gusto.

Enzo Fernandez lauded after Chelsea draw

But he was not the only Chelsea player to really impress the former Premier League midfielder. Mustoe claimed that Enzo Fernandez produced arguably his best performance for the club against Pep Guardiola’s side.

“I think I said after the game in the studio, wow, that’s a new standard for Chelsea now. That’s a new bar that they’ve set. If and when they perform in different ways and don’t get a good result, you can go back to the way that they played, the way they worked hard,” he said.

“Even the midfield players, particularly Enzo Fernandez. Enzo Fernandez, I’ve never seen him so far in English football, work as hard without the ball and track back.”

Mauricio Pochettino needs a repeat from his squad this weekend

It has certainly been a difficult 12 months for Fernandez. Of course, there was a huge spotlight on him following his move to Stamford Bridge in the 2023 January transfer window.

He had arguably launched himself onto the world stage by playing a starring role as Argentina won the 2022 World Cup.

But Chelsea fans have only seen glimpses of that player since that arrival. And with that, they may be reluctant to get too carried away with his performance against City.

But as Mustoe suggests, that display is the benchmark now. It is exactly what they needed ahead of the Carabao Cup final.

If they are going to overcome Liverpool, they need their best players to step up. Fernandez is one of those who needs to replicate his efforts against Manchester City at Wembley.
