‘I’ve got no idea why’: Pat Bonner gobsmacked by what one Celtic player did last night

Celtic legend Pat Bonner was left baffled by what he saw from Hoops defender Shane Duffy in the build-up to the opposition’s third goal in the Europa League last night.

The Hoops hosted Sparta Prague at Parkhead, the Czech side sitting bottom of Group H with two defeats from their opening two games prior to kickoff.

Despite the opposition being the easiest on paper out of all Celtic’s opponents in the group, they were the ones who dished out the heaviest defeat to Neil Lennon’s side.

Celtic were beaten 4-1, and Duffy, whose form had dropped but was showing signs of improvement, put in another poor performance.

While the entire Hoops back line struggled on the night, Duffy’s attempted lunge on David Karlsson for Sparta’s third goal, in hope of getting the ball, saw him taken out of the equation.

The Sweden winger easily went past him and surged down the left, where he put the ball on a platter for Lukas Julis to slam home from point-blank range and earn himself his hat-trick.

And Bonner, commentating on BBC Sport, was at a loss to explain.

“That’s the danger when El Hamed is high up the pitch, you get done on the counter,” he said ().

“I’ve got to say Karlsson goes past Duffy far too easily. I’ve got no idea why he’s diving in there.”

TBR View:

Just as it looked as though Duffy had turned a corner and was returning to decent form, he puts in another bad display which leaves Celtic on the receiving end of an embarrassing result, of which there have been plenty this season.

But it’s not just Duffy who’s struggling – the whole team yesterday put in an unacceptable display, and there’s a lot that has to be put right at Parkhead, and quickly, if the Bhoys are to get their season back on track.
