‘It’s time’… Pundit claims 24-year-old Arsenal attacker now needs to leave the Emirates Stadium

Shaka Hislop has suggested that the time has come for Reiss Nelson to leave Arsenal in the January transfer window, but compared the 24-year-old with a player now linked with the Gunners.

Reiss Nelson has endured another frustrating season at the Emirates. The winger is yet to make a single start in the Premier League this season as he remains behind Bukayo Saka in the pecking order.

Nelson stood out in Arsenal’s Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven earlier this month. But the signs appear to be ominous for the academy graduate with Saka proving to be so reliable.

Shaka Hislop thinks Reiss Nelson needs to now leave Arsenal

Nelson has been tipped to leave Arsenal next month. And Shaka Hislop has told that he would be better off if he moves elsewhere – but backed him to prove a real point if he does leave the club.

“He could [play for a top club], but he needs those minutes. It’s not going to happen for him at Arsenal. I think at 24, and having played as little as he has over the last couple of seasons, it’s time for Reiss Nelson to move. I don’t see the value of him staying at Arsenal even if Arsenal go on to win the title, I’m not sure what kind of professional reward there is in that. You want to advance your career, I think he needs to move,” he said.

“He needs a move to somewhere, not even necessarily mid-table. I think if you look near the bottom of the table, if you look at Leicester and Ipswich, top of the Championship, those are very likely destinations.

“I can’t help think of Solanke when I think of Reiss Nelson here. At Liverpool, not really doing an awful lot, gets a move and has now established himself as an asset in the Premier League. And if he decided to move, I think there would be any number of clubs who would be interested.

“I see the same for Reiss Nelson. He does need to take that step back.”

Dominic Solanke could be arriving as winger moves on

Of course, Hislop’s comments seem particularly significant ahead of this window because Dominic Solanke could be on the move in the coming weeks

In fact, Arsenal are interested in Solanke. He is perhaps not the most exciting name linked with a move to Mikel Arteta’s side in January. But the links do highlight how brilliantly the striker has done at Bournemouth since his move.

So you can understand why Hislop has mentioned his career path with Nelson now facing such a tough decision.

Clearly, Nelson would love nothing more than to be a success at Arsenal. But he will also not want to watch his career pass him by given the ‘‘ talent he possesses.

It is hard to see him dropping into the Championship – even if joining Leicester probably means that he will be back in the Premier League in a few months anyway. But you would think that there would be a number of takers in the top-flight if Arsenal were open to letting him leave next month.
