‘It’s surprising’: Ollie Watkins admits he’s been left shocked by one signing Aston Villa have made this summer

Striker Ollie Watkins has said ‘it’s surprising’ some of the club’s new signings decided to join Aston Villa.

“I think they’re all surprising signings really, they’re all players that have been linked with top, top clubs and they chose to come here.

“It shows the belief they have in the project and the current squad, I think it’s really exciting that they believe in that.”

Watkins surprised by new signing Carlos

Villa have been active in the market this summer, acting early to bring in Diego Carlos from Sevilla, who has already been named vice-captain, and Boubacar Kamara from Marseille.

“It’s surprising that he’s chosen Villa when he’s had bigger offers.”

Villa landing a signing like Carlos is a coup for the club given his Champions League and international experience.

He’s also accomplished at winning trophies, having been part of the Sevilla side that won the Europa League in 2019/20, and winning a gold medal at the Olympics in Tokyo.

Given the level of clubs he has been linked with, it could be deemed a surprise that he has ended up at Villa Park.

However, Steven Gerrard’s side are hugely ambitious and his arrival should only help them achieve their goals this season.

“I’ve said quite a lot it’s a new project, the manager’s trying to start something fresh and the ultimate goal is to win a trophy, and hopefully we can do that this year,” he added.
