‘It’s not a good sign’: Gabby Agbonlahor left concerned after watching 26-year-old Everton man play recently
Gabby Agbonlahor has been left concerned by the recent performances of Everton midfielder Dele Alli, amid speculation about his future.
“When you watch him, he’s lost the hunger for football.
“I don’t like to bring up money or what people earn, when you earn a certain amount of money so young, it can affect your hunger to carry on playing at the highest level.
“That’s what I see when I see Dele Alli, I don’t see him in Everton games or his later stages at Spurs, as someone who looks hungry.
“It’s a shame to see, he’s 26, should he be going to Besiktas at 26? I don’t think so.
“When he first came in (at Everton) Frank Lampard was excited, if you’re not going to succeed under Frank Lampard, who your game is really based on, late runs into the box, it’s not a good sign.”
Agbonlahor concerned after watching Alli’s recent performances
Dele Alli joined Everton on deadline day in January on a free transfer, after nearly seven seasons at Tottenham Hotspur.
The attacking midfielder has 37 England caps after making his debut in 2015 as a 19-year-old.
However, he’s not added to his tally in more than three years now, and hasn’t reached the levels seen at the start of his career for some time.
Alli was at his best playing alongside Harry Kane under Mauricio Pochettino, and started the Champions League final against Liverpool back in 2019.
However, Jose Mourinho was unable to get the best out of him during his spell at Spurs, and Antonio Conte only picked Alli six times before pushing him out of the club.
As Agbonlahor mentions, Alli’s game is very similar to that of manager Frank Lampard, who should be the perfect mentor to help him rediscover his best form.
However, there have been concerns about his efforts in training, and it now looks like Alli could be on the move again.
It’s a testament to how far off his best Alli is right now that Everton are without a fit striker, a role he is capable of playing as a deeper forward, and yet he still can’t break into the team.
He’s come off the bench in both of Everton’s Premier League games this season, but in the ten minutes he played against Aston Villa on Saturday, he only managed a single pass.
