‘It’s irritating me’… Barcelona star hits back amid Tottenham bid rumours

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has hit out about rumours surrounding his future amid links with a move to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

It’s clear the the summer transfer window is already coming into focus as we are now seeing rumours about the future of Frenkie de Jong.

The Barcelona midfielder seems to be linked away from the club every summer and this year doesn’t look any different.

This time, it’s a rather surprise rumour emerging as reports in Spain earlier in February suggested that Tottenham Hotspur have made a move for the Dutchman.

It was claimed that Spurs offered €60million (£51million) for De Jong alongside a four-year contract.

Fabrizio Romano played down the rumours and De Jong has now hit out about speculation over his future in Catalunya.

Frenkie de Jong hits out

As quoted by ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League clash with Napoli, De Jong hit back at the Catalan press.

De Jong claims some reports have been publishing ‘lies’ about his earnings at the Camp Nou, claiming his wages are nowhere near what is being claimed.

The midfielder added that he is happy at Barcelona and ultimately wants to stay at the club of his dreams for ‘many more years’ yet.

“Recently I am a little angry with what the press write in general,” said De Jong. “A lot of stuff that is not true has come out. I can’t understand it, people reporting lies. It’s irritating me a little.”

“For example, [the media] speak a lot about my contract, my salary etc … it’s a lot of smoke, a lot of lies, that I’m earning €40 million or whatever. That is a long way from what I earn — I won’t say numbers, but a story has been invented that is not true.

“[The media] must change what they are doing to many coaches and players, because you are writing things and inventing things that are not true. I am really happy at Barça, I have always said it. This is the club of my dreams, I hope I can play here for many more years,” he added.

The reality is that Barcelona will need to make a big sale or two this summer as they still fight to balance the books financially.

De Jong would be an appealing sale given that he would bring in a big chunk of cash on his own and Premier League clubs would be flocking to sign him.

We still can’t really see Tottenham being the team to land him though; they just signed Lucas Bergvall, a teenage midfielder being compared to De Jong for his style of play.

Signing and developing the next De Jong makes more sense for Spurs right now than a huge deal for the Barcelona man, and we would be surprised to see him join Tottenham any time soon.
