‘It’s great to see’: Aaron Ramsdale says he’s so pleased that 29-year-old is back in Leeds United team now

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has he’s so pleased that Patrick Bamford is back in the Leeds United team now.

The English duo faced off against each other yesterday in an eventful game at Elland Road.

Bamford was in the thick of the action for Jesse Marsch’s men as he missed a penalty, had one goal disallowed and thought he had forced a Gabriel Magalhaes red card.

The 29-year-old was handed his first start since August against Crystal Palace last weekend. But Bamford dropped to the bench once again yesterday as Rodrigo got the nod.

After a poor crossfield ball from the Spaniard led to Bukayo Saka’s goal in the first-half, Bamford was introduced at half-time. And the striker certainly made a huge impact, despite missing a penalty.

And his compatriot Ramsdale was delighted to see the Leeds man back on the pitch.

Ramsdale pleased for Bamford

When asked about his battle with Bamford at Elland Road yesterday, Ramsdale said: “Yeah, it’s really enjoyable. Firstly, it’s great to see Pat back out there after a long time.

“You play against these people, and you have competition and whatnot, but after the game, you have the mutual respect to say ‘hello’ and all those things.

“It’s good that you have that feeling that you’re getting one up on him at the time. He could quite easily have scored that penalty, and it turns in his favour.

“So, it’s a great little battle we’ve got, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t just me. We had some big blocks and moments from our defenders, midfielders and attackers. It’s a great day all-round, really.”

Ramsdale put in an excellent display between the sticks for Arsenal but Bamford thought he had got Leeds back on level terms in the second-half.

But Chris Kavanagh judged the forward to have fouled Gabriel right before he smashed the ball past the England shot stopper.

Bamford was asking serious questions of the Arsenal defence with his persistent running. And he thought he’d earned his side a penalty in stoppage time as Gabriel was initially sent-off for kicking out at him.

But VAR overruled the on-field decision and handed the Gunners a free-kick, while rescinding Gabriel’s red card.

Marsch will be disappointed that his side didn’t take their chances to earn something from the game. But there are plenty of signs of encouragement, particularly Bamford’s display.

The striker will be kicking himself for missing his opportunity from the penalty spot after William Saliba handled the ball. Bamford is yet to get off the mark in the Premier League this season but he should get plenty more opportunities if he plays like he did yesterday.
