‘It’s funny’… Gary Lineker reacts after what he heard about Richarlison during Newcastle game this weekend
Gary Lineker has shared what he did not realise about Richarlison after the forward bagged a brace to help Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle on Sunday.
Lineker was speaking on podcast after Ange Postecoglou’s side ran out 4-1 winners to end their recent run without a victory.
Sunday could prove to be a significant day in the Spurs career of Richarlison. The Brazilian had really struggled for goals during his time in North London. But he got the chance to lead the line against Newcastle, with Son Heung-min pushing out to the left.

The decision proved to be inspired. Son gave Kieran Trippier a torrid evening. And Richarlison bagged two goals, one in either half, in what he will be hoping proves to be the turning point.

Some may have wondered whether Richarlison would ever come good at Tottenham. Nevertheless, Gary Lineker was initially unaware just how unique his brace was.
“Two goals for Richarlison. It’s funny I didn’t realise until I saw the stat yesterday that it was the first time he had scored for Spurs with his feet and then he scored another one,” he told .
“Football is a daft game isn’t it! He was full of energy, and we have said this before, he just needs to get his confidence and he could go banging in a few goals.”
Turning point or another false dawn for Tottenham striker?
Unfortunately, there have been a few false dawns in Richarlison’s time at Tottenham already. Fans would have hoped that goals against the likes of Marseille and Sheffield United would be the moment everything clicked for the former Everton man.
So everyone, including the forward himself, will be wary of getting carried away after Sunday. There is plenty of work ahead before the 26-year-old vindicates the club’s decision to sign him for such a large fee.
But while he is playing in Ange Postecoglou’s side, he can always expect to have chances to feed off. And thus, perhaps this time may well prove to be different for Richarlison.
