Eddie Howe to Celtic seemed like a sure thing, but there’s now renewed uncertainty regarding the identity of the club’s next manager.
After Daily Mail chief football reporter quoted Howe’s representative on Wednesday night as saying that reports of a deal being close are “extremely premature”, there’s a degree of confusion among supporters who had been pinning their hopes on an imminent Howe announcement.
It appears as though interim boss John Kennedy will remain in charge until the end of the season, and will be tasked with restoring some pride in a Scottish Cup campaign that sees them take on Rangers later this month in the fourth round at Ibrox.
The former Celtic defender addressed the managerial issue at his press conference on Thursday, and urged eager supporters to be patient.
As quoted by the , Kennedy said:”Ultimately the club have to make the right decision for the greater good of the club going forward.
“Do you bring in a manager or name a manager right now that’s not quite right for the sake of a season book, or do they make sure they make the right decision long term?
“It’s difficult, I understand.
“I think people expect that everybody behind the scenes knows everything, but some things have to remain private to the point that decisions are ready to be made.
“We’ve just got to be patient in this time. It’s been a difficult season, but the club want to do the right thing moving forward.
“Sometimes that takes a bit longer than everyone would like, but we’ve got to be patient and keep building forward.”
Kennedy will be in the dugout on Saturday when his side return to Premiership business, with Hibs the visitors in Celtic’s last game before that crucial cup derby at Ibrox on April 17.
