Italy manager Luciano Spalletti thinks Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa could play in an entirely new position

Federico Chiesa is yet to make his Liverpool debut following his summer switch from Juventus.

Liverpool left it very late to get any signings over the line but their patience paid off when they struck a £10m agreement to sign Federico Chiesa.

The winger could prove to be the bargain of the summer in the Premier League with Chiesa not earning eye-watering wages at Liverpool either.

But Federico Chiesa is yet to make his debut for the Reds after sitting out of their 3-0 win over Manchester United. He was also left out of the Italy squad for the international break to have time to settle at his new club.

Italy have coped well without their star winger, with a 3-1 win over France followed by a 2-1 win over Israel on Monday night.

Manager Luciano Spalletti spoke about Chiesa after the full-time whistle and suggested he could play an entirely new role.

Luciano Spalletti on Federico Chiesa

Chiesa has been a star performer for Italy in recent years, including a stellar performance against England in the Euro 2020 final.

There is no doubt that he will quickly return to the international setup once he is settled in Liverpool.

Speaking after the Israel win, Spalletti suggested that Chiesa could add to Italy’s attack not only as a winger – but also as a striker.

As quoted by , Spalletti said: “I imagine he could play as a second striker, but more free to go on the wings.

“This 3-5-2 can sometimes also be with a central striker and an open striker, it does not necessarily have to be with two central strikers”.

It seems Spalletti is ready to experiment with Chiesa playing centrally, and it could be great news for Liverpool and Arne Slot.

Federico Chiesa could thrive in new Liverpool role

The general feeling around Chiesa’s arrival is that he will be the long-term heir to Mohamed Salah if the Egyptian leaves at the end of his contract.

However, that could also mean that Chiesa could struggle for first-team minutes with Salah the clear favourite in the right-wing spot.

But if Chiesa is able to play as a striker – and he certainly has the attributes to do so – then it gives Slot extra options for his shiny new summer signing.

Diogo Jota has cemented a starting spot early on this season and Darwin Nunez will be desperate for minutes, but with plenty of games to play this season, Chiesa could have opportunities out wide and centrally for Liverpool this season.
