Italian Journalist says he was not convinced by Wilfried Gnonto

Journalist Mario Sconcerti that he was not convinced by Wilfried Gnonto following the Leeds United forward’s start for Italy in their win over Hungary.

Gnonto, of course, is awaiting the chance to make his debut for the Whites. And it would be no surprise if the large portion of his minutes for the time-being came with the under-21s.

But he continues to feature for the Azzurri. In fact, Roberto Mancini handed the 18-year-old a start on Monday for their key Nations League clash.

Victory for Italy would see Mancini’s men book their spot in the semi-final. And it proved to be a successful night for the Euro 2020 winners.

Italy won 2-0 to book that last four spot at the expense of their opponents. And Gnonto played a key role in the opening goal, forcing Peter Gulacsi to give the ball away.

The Italian media had mixed views of Gnonto’s performance. And Sconcerti picked out the teenager when asked whether any of the Italian players had failed to convince him during this international break.

“What I didn’t really understand is Gnonto. It is not known what role he plays and what he is used for. But obviously Mancini considers him useful,” .

In some ways, Gnonto not exactly stealing the show on international duty is going to help him upon his return to Leeds.

The fans are already excited about his potential. But Jesse Marsch is looking to take things slowly with Gnonto. It must not be forgotten that Leeds probably would not have signed him in the past window had it not been for failing to get other targets and the decision to loan Dan James out.

He is likely to be in and around the first-team in the coming months. But it will do Gnonto no favours to be rushed into the starting lineup.

The comments about his display for Italy highlight that he does have a little more work to do.
