‘It suits me’: £25m Tottenham player says Antonio Conte has helped him completely transform his mentality this season

Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Ryan Sessegnon has .

Sessegnon made the switch from Fulham to Spurs back in 2019 for a fee worth around £25 million ().

The 22-year-old got off to a difficult start to his Spurs career as he struggled to break into the side under former bosses Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

The England U21 international was even sent out on loan to Bundeslga outfit Hoffenheim during the 2020-21 campaign.

But the former Fulham man has found a new lease of life under Conte in the wing-back role. And Sessegnon has praised the Italian for helping him transform his mentality.

Sessegnon says Conte has transformed his mentality

“He gives me confidence, the way he wants me to play, it suits me very well,” he said.

“He’s kind of changed the mentality inside me. From a physical point of view in terms of feeling good in my body and giving me the platform to go out and prove to him that I can play at this level.

“Coming into a new season where this is going to be the first time the gaffer [manager] can really set out his team, I knew I had to go away and get my body right and I knew it was going to be a gruelling pre-season when we went to South Korea.

“But my body got through that thankfully and it’s been a good start to the season.”

Sessegnon has struggled with persistent hamstring injuries during his time in North London. The injuries often stopped the youngster from gaining any real momentum in a Spurs shirt.

But the Englishman seems to have put this behind him and has put in some promising displays for Conte’s side this season.

The wing-back is directly competing with Ivan Perisic for a place in the Tottenham team, but started alongside the Croatian veteran against Leicester last Saturday.

Sessegnon will be hoping to continue his good run of form and build on a promising injury-free spell at Spurs.
