Is this how Newcastle United can be revived as a Premier League force?
It has been 61 years since the Magpies last tasted success, when they won the FA Cup for the third time in a five year period. Jump to 2016 and Newcastle United have made it past the 3rd Round of the same competition just once in the last six years with Stevenage, Cardiff and Watford all claiming victories. They find themselves in a relegation battle yet again despite over £65 million being spent on transfers this season, so just what has happened to the team that was going toe to toe with Manchester United for the Premier League and qualifying for Europe?
Ever since Alan Pardew narrowly missed out on a top four spot with Newcastle in 2012, the club has entered a downward spiral with no sign of reversing the flow. An appalling run of form over the next two years saw Pardew leave to join Crystal Palace in 2014 with John Carver left to hold the fort. They stayed up by the skin of their teeth on the final day in 2015 with Jonas Gutierrez taking the acclaim of survival saviour. A statement was made in the summer to change things before they weren’t so lucky again, however, McClaren and his recruits haven’t done anything to improve the state of United and fans are sick of it. So how can this problem be fixed? Read on to see a few things I think could help bring some joy back to a gloomy Tyneside.
