Is Serge Aurier now Jose Mourinho’s number one right-back at Tottenham?

Tottenham defender Serge Aurier looks to have completely won round Jose Mourinho and now, appears to be the number one choice at right-back for Spurs.

The Ivory Coast international must have been fearing the worse in the summer when Mourinho went out and splashed out around £15m on Wolves and Republic of Ireland star, Matt Doherty.

Aurier, who has been criticised in the past by Spurs fans for a lack of discipline as well as inconsisten performances, must have thought he was on his way out. Indeed, reports over the summer claimed he very nearly did leave, with AC Milan said to have been keen.

But it looks like now that Aurier has won the trust of Mourinho. And having started the last two Premier League games and see Doherty selected in the Europa League last night, the signs are all there that the 27-year-old is here to stay.

New beginnings

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Aurier in the summer. A number of poor displays last term and the signing of Doherty, seemingly signalling the end for the Ivorian.

However, the claims a new deal may be on the table following his upturn in form. The right-back currently earns around £70k-a-week, per , and may well see an increase in that salary as well as the extension.

And while it’s not nailed on that we will see Aurier week in, week out, in the Premier League, the Europa League XI’s are usually a good indicator as to where a manager’s thinking lies.

Doherty shouldn’t be too disheartened. Healthy competition is a must in successful squads and he’ll have a big role to play.

But for Serge Aurier, it marks a glorious turnaround and return to form that few in north London would have seen coming.
