When Roy Hodgson took over at Crystal Palace last season, many thought he wouldn’t be able to turn around a record-breaking run of seven straight defeats that left the Eagles bottom of the Premier League.
Frank de Boer’s revolutionary stint at Palace was supposed to see the club turned into a possession powerhouse, dominating games with the ball and playing attractive football.
Unfortunately for the Dutchman, it never took off. He endured a tough and disrupted pre-season, picking up no points in seven matches before being replaced.
Enter Hodgson. The former England manager’s playing career goes all the way back to starting out at Palace as a youth player, though he never made the first team.
His past endeared him to the fans, and his experience saved the Eagles, who picked up 44 points from their remaining 31 games, finishing 11th.
Hodgson’s approach has been to stabilise Palace’s leaky defence through organisation, highlighted by the compact defending that earned them a draw at Old Trafford this weekend.
Yet, with only nine points taken from their opening 13 games, it’s hard to argue that Hodgson is underwhelming this season.
As seen from their points per game tally last season under Roy, Palace should have already secured double the amount of points they have earned this time round.
With no outgoings really worthy of note in the summer and to play alongside the coveted Wilfred Zaha, Hodgson might soon find himself under some pressure if results don’t improve.
