Is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set for a €70 million move from Dortmund to Chelsea?

Chelsea’s striker hunt continues to linger on with still no solution as Diego Costa nears the exit door, but there has been a new twist as Spanish newspaper  report that the Blues are in talks with Borussia Dortmund over a €70 million (£62.5 million) move for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

What would he bring to Stamford Bridge?

The Gabon captain has proven himself to be one of Europe’s most prolific strikers in Europe with 40 goals in 46 games last season. His pace and direct style would immediately make him an attractive option for Antonio Conte as he looks to rebuild his attack at Stamford Bridge.

The Dortmund striker is a huge danger on the counter-attack, which became a big part of Chelsea’s game last season as the likes of Pedro and Eden Hazard used their pace to hit teams on the break when they least expected it. Aubameyang would add another dimension to that.

It’s also worth pointing out that the striker is versatile and can adapt to swap and change in a front three, with his style often seeing him cut inside from wide positions before unleashing one of his excellent pin-point finishes.

Is a move likely?

Aubameyang has spoken of his desire of a fresh challenge this summer and the striker has been strongly linked with a move to China with Tianjin Quanjian, and Italian giants AC Milan have also been mooted as a potential destination, according to .

However, it does seem bizarre that these rumours have emerged from a Spanish newspaper, regarding a move of a player from Gabon who has previously played in Italy and France, going from Germany to England.

The 28-year-old does not quite fit with many of the club’s key aspects of transfer policy either. The suggested fee would smash the club’s current transfer record for a player who would has very low prospects of being sold on again for a profit.

That’s not to say that a move is impossible, but it does seem that it is convenient to have interest emerging in well known names as Chelsea try to negotiate a lower price for Real Madrid centre-forward Alvaro Morata.

Verdict – 3/5

Chelsea fans will be hoping that Aubameyang is a target, but it seems unlikely. Alvaro Morata seems to be the favourite to be Chelsea’s big summer signing up-front and whilst this deal is a possibility, it’s certainly not the most probable option.
