Is Nathan Patterson set for Rangers first-team role after number change?

Rangers have given a big hint regarding the potentially increased involvement of youngster Nathan Patterson at Ibrox next season.

Steven Gerrard handed the 18-year-old right-back his first-team debut for Rangers back in January, as he featured in a 2-0 SFA Cup match win against Stranraer.

Patterson also played a major role in Rangers’ Colts run to the Scottish Challenge Cup semi-finals. He even captained Graeme Murty’s youngsters in that defeat.

When Patterson made his Rangers debut last season, he did so wearing the number 63 shirt, hardly an indicator of regular first-team action.

However, Rangers announced their squad numbers for the 2020-21 campaign this week and Patterson has gone up in the world.

The teenager will now wear the number 16 shirt at Ibrox, which might suggest that Rangers boss Gerrard is ready to give him more first-team chances next season.

In January, , Gerrard admitted that Patterson had caught his eye, even if he was not yet ready for first-team action.

“Nathan Patterson is one for the future. I wouldn’t say he is 100 per cent ready for the first team just yet but I gave him a taste of it in our friendly in Dubai last weekend and he did himself no harm.

“Talent and ability-wise, I like what I see. If Nathan keeps progressing and developing the areas around that talent, then I predict a bright future for him.”

However, Rangers have lost Jon Flanagan this summer leaving just captain James Tavernier as a regular right-back option for Rangers and Gerrard.

Patterson might just have a chance to find himself the main back-up option to Tavernier at Ibrox and Rangers fans will no doubt be backing their young talent to make an impact.
