Is Jurgen Klopp looking for a Liverpool reunion with Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?
According to reports from on Friday morning, Liverpool are the latest side joining the race for Borussia Dortmund sensation Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after contacting the Bundesliga side.
It is understood that representatives of Jurgen Klopp’s side have enquired about the prolific Gabonese international ahead of a summer move, rivalling Chelsea for the £65 million-rated striker.
And it has now been claimed that Liverpool have taken the lead in the race for Aubameyang, with Klopp’s personal relationship with him from their time spent at Borussia Dortmund helping the Reds’ case.
Would the Gabon international be the right fit at Anfield?
Despite reporting a few days ago that Chelsea had stolen a march for the 28-year-old after missing out on Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, it seems they could miss out once again.
Klopp’s link to Aubameyang could be a huge part of pushing a deal through, with the forward comfortable with the German’s management and confident in his way of getting results from a side.
The impact that the Gabon international could have at Anfield needs little introduction, with his destructive and prolific nature in front of goal almost sure to guarantee goals wherever he ends up.
31 goals in just 32 Bundesliga appearances last season in a simply astonishing return, beating off Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski to win the Golden Boot.
Add to this seven Champions League goals in just nine matches and Aubameyang has nothing left to prove on the biggest stages.
His raw pace is mesmeric at times, almost unstoppable when he gets in full flow, and his clever movement off the shoulder of the last defender has been the hallmark of his play for years now.
Of these 31 Bundesliga goals all of them came from inside the area and the Dortmund man is the epitome of instinctive around the six-yard box, happy to score with either foot and equally his head.
Naturally the Premier League would offer a different test of his abilities in an arguably tougher, quicker and more physical environment, but he has the nerve and the desire needed to succeed.
He could slot in superbly to Klopp’s preferred system at Anfield too, playing the role of the lone forward and feeding off of the bountiful goods offered by Liverpool’s vast midfield; just consider for a brief second the tantalising thought of Aubameyang, Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and new boy Mohamed Salah lining up together in the Premier League during next season.
It seems that the only potential stumbling block between a move to Anfield comes in the form of Aubameyang’s financial demands, with £180,000-per-week deemed a little steep by the English side.
But for a player of his quality, and with a solid rapport with manager Klopp already under his belt, Aubameyang could be the statement signing that Liverpool need to compete at the top next season.
