Is James Tavernier really cut out to bear the Rangers captaincy?

Rangers full-back James Tavernier was handed the captain’s armband by Steven Gerrard as one of the first big calls he made upon becoming manager in May 2018.

The Liverpool legend assessed his squad of players and felt at the time that Tavernier would be best suited to lead the players on the pitch going forwards.

It was a bright start to the season for the Light Blues as they secured qualification for the Europa League group stages.

They have also done OK in the Scottish Premiership, taking 21 points from 11 games to sit third.

Of late though, Gerrard’s side have been struggling a little. They defeated St. Mirren 2-0 last weekend, but lost their unbeaten record in Europe to Spartak Moscow, losing 4-3 in Russia on Thursday.

They also dropped points against Kilmarnock in the league and were dumped out of the League Cup by Aberdeen.

He’s plundered six goals, but Tavernier’s recent form has been a bit patchy and some have questioned his ability to be the verbal leader that can inspire during the difficult moments.

But if not Tavernier, then who?

Allan McGregor

McGregor may have only signed for the Gers in August, but he is hugely experienced and very vocal from his goal.

He is adored by Rangers supporters, having already had an 11-year stint at the club between 2001-2012.

McGregor leads by example with his performances and perhaps he’d relish the role of being captain.

Connor Goldson

Goldson, like McGregor, signed for the club as part of the Gerrard revolution.

He is the current vice-captain at Ibrox, but maybe he has it in him to be the main man.

His form has been largely excellent this term, and he often barks orders at his teammates, with Tavernier doing so less frequently.

Scott Arfield

Another new face at Ibrox, and another man arguably better suited to the role of captain than Tavernier.

Arfield was recently made the skipper of Canada, so clearly he is in possession of some leadership qualities.

Arfield being a central midfielder is also something which could make him a better option than Tavernier.

The ex-Burnley man is right in the thick of it all, and no teammate of his would be out of his range.
