Is Everton youngster Kieran Dowell set for more opportunities?

Everton youngster Kieran Dowell could be ready to play more minutes, after shining for the England U21s on Tuesday.

Dowell managed to get himself on the scoresheet for Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions, with England beating Scotland 2-0 in the UEFA Nations League to extend their unbeaten run in qualifiers to 35 games.

It was a good performance from England, with Dowell himself having a good game in the middle of the park.

He showed calmness in possession and was a threat from set pieces.

His goal was particularly well taken; gathering a loose ball on the edge of the box and rifling in a left-foot strike into the top corner.

Do more chances beckon at Everton?

Dowell will be hoping his showing on international duty will prompt Marco Silva to hand him more chances at club level.

The 21-year-old hasn’t appeared for the first-team in the Premier League since the 2015/16 season.

Last term he was loaned out to Nottingham Forest where he did well, scoring nine goals in 38 Championship appearances and another in the FA Cup.

This term Dowell has been handed two starts in the Carabao Cup by Silva against Rotherham United and Southampton.

With the Toffees now out of the competition, Dowell will need to work harder to catch the eye.

There is a lot of competition in midfield at the moment, although Tom Davies’ rise will serve as inspiration for the player.

His showing with England was definitely encouraging but he hasn’t really taken his opportunities at club level so far
