Is £26.7million an acceptable price for Liverpool to sell Emre Can to Juventus?
Italian newspaper report that Juventus could look to Anfield to rejuvenate their midfield with the presence of Liverpool midfielder Emre Can. The reports indicate that the Turin based club could bid as much as €30 million (£26.7 million) for the German international.
With an ageing midfield, Massimiliano Allegri is considering reinforcements and is believed to prefer Can to the alternatives, with the likes of Blaise Matuidi considered too old compared to the energy and youth of Can.
The 23-year-old is entering into the final year of his contract at Anfield and is yet to put pen to paper on an extended deal on Merseyside, which could put the Reds under pressure to consider the offer. With no recent updates on negotiations over a new deal, there may be cause for concern.
In fairness, a bid worth more than £26 million is a substantial offer for a player with less than 12 months left on his contract. Eyebrows were raised when a similar price was attached to Liverpool target Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, so it is perhaps unfair to laugh off the proposal. That said, it remains some way off Liverpool’s likely asking price for a player that they may not even consider selling under any circumstances.
Under different circumstances Can would easily command a much higher fee. Despite starting the season on the bench, Can quickly capitalised on his opportunities and established himself as a firm option in the holding role in a midfield three in Jordan Henderson’s absence, even excelling when playing in a more advanced role in the trio.
Can also continues to improve his game, having more of an impact with each passing season having come on leaps and bounds since his arrival under Brendan Rodgers in 2014. If he continues on his current path, having won the Confederations Cup this summer, he could be worth a substantial fee.
There remains the risk that rejecting the bid may lead to Can leaving on a free. That said, there have been no significant rumours that the midfielder is unhappy or seeking a move away and a deal could be agreed to keep him at Anfield long term. With another year of Can’s services, he may well be convinced that Liverpool could be a European power like Juventus, and it may well justify turning down such a bid this summer.
Given the statement kind of deals that Liverpool have been looking to make this summer, it would be a huge surprise to see the Reds allow Can to leave this summer.
