‘8/10’, ‘Faultless’: 22-year-old Liverpool star earns rave reviews from his country’s national media, after debut

Ireland ended a decent end-of-season camp with a solid 0-0 draw away at Hungary on Tuesday night, in front of 14,000 fans. Liverpool goalkeeper Caomihin Kelleher made his debut for Ireland, replacing Gavin Bazunu between the sticks at half-time – and the Irish Times have applauded him.

Kelleher, 22, has enjoyed a brilliant 2020-21 campaign at Liverpool. Breaking into the senior side to make five appearances, the goalkeeper was even picked above Adrian with Alisson sidelined on occasion. His form has earned him international recognition, and now he has his first cap.

In front of a big crowd, Kelleher replaced Manchester City’s Bazunu at half-time – after the City goalkeeper had done well in the first half. Kelleher produced two magic moments, towards the end of his debut to keep a clean sheet intact. Firstly, he stopped striker Adam Szalai with a stunning stop.

Then, Kelleher pulled off a brilliant one-handed reaction save to stop Szalai’s namesake Attila. He pushed Szalai’s left-footed half-volley tipped over. A brilliant debut – and the Kelleher an 8/10: “Faultless, making two stunning saves in quick succession.”

What does Liverpool man Kelleher need to do this summer – to enhance Ireland claims?

Clearly, Kelleher has made an impression at national level on manager Stephen Kelly after his brilliant substitute outing. But to show Kenny that he is a contender to start, he needs to go on loan and play regularly. A move to a Championship club would surely suit Kelleher.

Ability with the ball at his feet, but just as good at shot-stopping, Kelleher needs game time. Liverpool need to sanction his exit on loan. Impressing at a Championship club, Kelleher would strengthen his Ireland claims.
