International manager hints at summer exit for Everton midfielder
Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has hinted at a possible summer exit for Everton’s James McCarthy.
The midfielder has been left out of the latest Ireland squad so that he can focus on sorting his future out at club level.
The former Wigan Athletic player has endured a nightmare last 18 months or so after suffering a horrific leg break in January 2018.
He spent most of the 2018/19 season recovering and finally returned for the first-team against Manchester United last month.
He actually wanted to leave the club on loan in January in a bid to get playing more regularly, but a move did not materialise.
A departure could be on the cards this summer though, if Ireland boss McCarthy’s words are anything to go by.
He said, : “He’s just not been playing and I did speak to him. He wants to sort his own career out, his own future out this summer.
“Had he been fully fit for the last 12 months things might have been different because I think he’s one of our best players but that’s not been the case. So he wants to just sort himself out this summer.”
TBR’s view
Prior to his injury, McCarthy – who takes home £60,000-a-week – was a really handy player for Everton.
A loan move this summer would be ideal for all parties, since he will be entering the final year of his contract next term.
The Toffees can allow him to play regularly elsewhere and then determine whether or not he would be worth an offer of an extension.
