‘Inspirational’: Arsenal star Kieran Tierney hailed by former Celtic colleague

Despite going off injured in his side’s 3-0 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday, it’s been a positive season for Kieran Tierney.

His Arsenal side may be toiling in the Premier League, but the left-back has been a standout and has also turned in a series of impressive performances for the Scottish national team.

Tierney struggled with injuries after his £25m move from Celtic in 2019, but since the return of football last summer he’s more than lived up to his transfer fee.

He made his breakthrough at Celtic Park before going on to Premier League success, and that trajectory is serving as an inspiration for a former colleague.

Defender Stephen Welsh made his Celtic debut while Tierney was still in Glasgow, and has turned out nine times for the first time this season.

Having been a member of the squad alongside Tierney, he’s seen first-hand the attitude that has taken Tierney to the top.

As quoted by the , Welsh said: “When I first started training with the first team, his work rate was exceptional, he worked harder than anyone and he also helped all the young boys.

He made us feel welcome and led by example with his performances on the training ground and in games.

“It’s inspirational and it’s all down to that work rate. He’s always had the ability but it’s his determination that’s taken him to this level.

“His performances for Scotland were great, especially against the Faroes. When he was in the wing back position, his crossing and passing was unbelievable. You really saw his quality.”

Welsh could soon be involved in a Scottish Cup derby, with Celtic having been drawn away against Rangers in the fourth round.
