When you think of the greatest midfielders the Premier League has ever seen, Roy Keane springs to mind – Arsenal’s Declan Rice could just be the modern-day version of the Manchester United icon.
The Gunners smashed their transfer record in the summer to sign Rice from West Ham United. Everybody knew he was going to be a success, but there were some doubts over if he would hit the ground running.
Rice has dismissed those concerns in style, and he has almost certainly been the best signing of last summer’s transfer window.
He is one of the biggest reasons why Arsenal are on top of the Premier League table right now, and Jamie Carragher says the Gunners midfielder reminds him of Keane.
He wrote: “Declan Rice, at £105 million, is a bargain for Arsenal. There are certain players who move for astronomical fees and are almost guaranteed to be successful.
“I feel the same way about Rice that I felt about Roy Keane when he joined Manchester United for a British record fee in 1993, and Alan Shearer when he joined Newcastle United in 1996. Harry Kane is another; he was a guarantee for Bayern Munich this summer.
“From the moment he joined Arsenal, you knew that Rice would be brilliant. He has been probably the most influential player in the Premier League this season and, every time I watch him, he reminds me of Keane. He has that same presence, and he has a passing ability that is incredibly underrated.
“When you think of the great midfielders of the past, they all had an aura on the pitch. Keane had it, and so did players like Graeme Souness and Bryan Robson. I see those same qualities in Rice, who could be the difference for Arsenal this season as they challenge for the title.”
Declan Rice could become an Arsenal legend
Declan Rice is one of the best players in the Premier League, and Arsenal fans are delighted to have him in their squad.
The England international has everything in his game. He’s brilliant on the ball, just as good without it, and he has the engine to dominate any midfield on his own. To add to that, he can score goals and provide assists as well, which makes him the complete midfielder.
The huge positive for Arsenal now is that Rice is still just 24 years old. He is nowhere near his prime yet, which means he will get even better in the coming years.
If Rice continues to progress at the same rate, we’re sure he will end his career as an Arsenal and England legend.
