‘Incredible’ player who has left Liverpool advancing in Bayer Leverkusen talks

Liverpool have recently bid farewell to three club stalwarts who have left Anfield upon the expiry of their respective contracts.

Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Adrian were all at Liverpool for a number of years, but all three have now left Anfield.

Matip spent eight fruitful years at Liverpool, while Thiago played for the Reds for four years and Adrian was on their books for five years.

Two of the above have already sorted their futures out. Thiago has joined Barcelona’s coaching staff, while Adrian has signed for Real Betis on a free transfer.

Now, it looks like Matip is making good progress in establishing his next destination.

If all goes well, he could be joining one of the most successful clubs from the 2023/24 season.

Liverpool stalwart Joel Matip in talks with Bayer Leverkusen

Matip is said to have been in talks with Bayer Leverkusen, and Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the state of play.

The Bundesliga and German Cup champions are reportedly advancing in talks to sign the veteran defender on a free transfer.

Leverkusen are said to be “really keen” on Matip, who has received several approaches from various clubs.

Talks are under way, with Leverkusen’s interest described as “concrete”, added Romano.

The transfer insider also credited Sky Germany journalists Florian Plettenberg and Patrick Berger in his tweet.

Liverpool connection set to continue for Matip

Matip made a total of  appearances for Liverpool – scoring 11 goals and providing six assists – in a fruitful stint at Anfield.

He helped Jurgen Klopp win the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup across eight years, not to mention the FA Community Shield.

Now, if all goes well, Matip’s Liverpool connection could continue under the management of an Anfield cult hero, who the Reds were said to be after after Klopp announced his decision to step down.

In the meantime, Liverpool will be looking for a replacement for Matip. The Reds were linked with Leny Yoro, but they reportedly cooled their interest as he joined Manchester United instead.
