‘Incredible’ Liverpool fringe player has perfect opportunity to shine v PNE – TBR View

Liverpool will be hoping to follow up their amazing weekend Premier League win by reaching the Carabao Cup quarter-finals tonight.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds will be heading to Preston for their fourth-round tie, and the likelihood is the Anfield outfit will ring the changes.

One rarely-seen player who is likely to feature for Liverpool is third-choice goalkeeper Adrian.

Second-choice Caoimhin Kelleher was absent from the squad in Sunday’s 5-0 Premier League win at Manchester United due to illness.

The 22-year-old returned to team training this week but has not fully recovered from the issue.

This is likely to keep the Irishman out of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round clash at Deepdale.

When asked about Kelleher’s availability, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders on Tuesday: “Not sure.

“He trained with the team but it seems he had a little setback so he probably will not be involved.”

Adrian could now make only his second Liverpool appearance in more than a year.

The £58,000-a-week stopper joined the Reds in 2019 on a free transfer from West Ham, and initially impressed.

Shortly after signing, Adrian helped Liverpool win the European Super Cup against Chelsea, keeping out Tammy Abraham’s spot kick.

“When I first spoke to him (about signing) it was clear we needed to get him fit but then we had to put him straight in,” Klopp after that game.

“He put in an incredible performance. Both goalkeepers did but for Adrián it was more surprising as there was no real preparation.

“I don’t even know when he last played for West Ham, to be honest. It’s so nice for him.

“I don’t think he won a lot in his life so to win this big one is so nice for him.

“Plus he showed that he is a proper personality in the dressing room. He was even louder than I was at half-time.”

Fast-forward just over two years and games for Adrian are few and far between.

However, he has the perfect opportunity to impress Klopp tonight and perhaps give his manager food for thoughts regarding second-choice in between the sticks.
