‘Incredible’… Keith Downie shocked by what £11m Newcastle player did v PSG

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope earned praise from Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie for the save he made in the second half against Paris Saint-Germain.

The 30-year-old Magpies ace made an outstanding close-range stop to deny Bradley Barcola in the 66th minute of the Champions League encounter.

Kylian Mbappe took the ball past Fabian Schar on the outside then teed up the PSG substitute for a seemingly certain goal.

However, the Newcastle stopper had other ideas. He instinctively moved to his right and kept Barcola’s effort out with his knee.

“It was an incredible save by Pope to deny Barcola,” Downie said, as per the . “Newcastle’s goal living a charmed life…”

‘Absolutely fantastic’

Meanwhile, Newcastle legend Chris Waddle, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, praised Mbappe’s flick and couldn’t believe that Barcola didn’t find the back of the net.

“That little flick from Mbappe was absolutely fantastic. Barcola has got to score,” he said, as per the .

It was a key contribution in what was so close to being a famous victory for Newcastle, but sadly a late penalty resulted in a share of the spoils.

Tino Livramento was harshly penalised for a handball in the box, and Mbappe hammered a penalty high into the net, against which the diving Pope had no chance.

Nevertheless, Pope’s save from Barcola was an outstanding contribution from an outstanding goalkeeper who continues to deliver for Newcastle in their remarkable rise to prominence.

The Magpies signed Pope for a reported £11million, and he’s certainly proven a bargain. With over 60 Newcastle appearances under his belt, he’s repaid his fee many times over.
