‘Incredible ability’: Gordon Strachan raves about ‘terrific’ player who’d love Celtic return

Gordon Strachan has named Celtic cult hero Aiden McGeady in his best Hoops XI, in conversation with the .

The 34-year-old winger, who on Sunderland’s books but on loan at Championship side Charlton Athletic, came through the Parkhead ranks in 2004 and spent six years with the Hoops.

During his time at Celtic, McGeady .

He also won numerous individual awards including the PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year, PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year, Celtic Fans’ Player of the Year and Celtic Players’ Player of the Year – all in 2007-08.

In 2010, McGeady swapped Glasgow for Moscow, moving to Spartak for a four-year stint, after which he spent three years with Everton – which featured loans at Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End, before moving to Sunderland in 2017.

While still on the Black Cats’ books, he is not in Phil Parkinson’s future plans and is currently plying his trade for the Addicks, after which he is expected to leave the Stadium of Light as his contract expires in the summer.

“He’s got incredible ability and worked so hard. He could play anywhere in attack. I remember playing him up top in a League Cup final against Rangers. We won 2-0 and he was terrific.

“Jesus, we had a lot of arguments – but I kept playing him because I’m not daft. He had incredible ability to beat people and, on his day, can look really terrific – as people will have seen in the TV documentary ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’.”

McGeady was superb for Celtic, being rightly recognised by Strachan as one of the best players he had at his service, and sadly hasn’t been as successful elsewhere as he was with the Hoops.

The Republic of Ireland international admitted in 2018 that he’d be happy to play for Celtic again before he retires, as reported by the .

Although he believes the moment has passed for him to return, it could be food for thought for Lennon in terms of bringing him back in perhaps a player-coach capacity?
