‘In the last hour, we’ve been told’: Sky Sports reporter shares on-air update about Diego Carlos

Newcastle United have been heavily linked with Diego Carlos in recent weeks.

However, it looks as though the Magpies will now have competition from the Premier League for his signature.

On Tuesday, Sky Sports reported that Carlos had asked Sevilla if he could leave.

However, the Spanish outfit, understandably, doesn’t want to let him go that easily.

Now, it appears as though one of Newcastle’s top-flight rivals have also made a bid for the 28-year-old.

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol broke the news on-air ().

“In the last hour, we’ve been told another Premier League club is trying to sign Diego Carlos and they have made a bid for him,” he said.

“Newcastle had been in talks to sign him. He’s a very experienced Brazilian defender, who is part of the best defence in La Liga this season.

“Our information is that the player would like to leave Sevilla and to come and play for Newcastle, so much so he handed in a transfer request yesterday.

“So it looked like there were positive signs that he could be going to Newcastle.

“Then another Premier League club came in for him today, they have matched Newcastle’s £30m bid. That has complicated the situation.”

Solhekol also claimed Newcastle have competition from Italy too.

“I’m also told there’s an Italian club trying to sign Carlos,” he continued.

“They have suggested a price that they are willing to pay, and that’s not as much as £30m, so I think we can discard them for the time being.”

Newcastle are in a Premier League relegation battle, so it’s crucial for them to bolster their ranks.

But with the might of the Saudi PIF behind them, money is not much of an object for the Magpies.

Newcastle have already made huge progress in turning Carlos’ head.

However, it was never going to be easy.

Not only are Sevilla playing hardball over Carlos’ signature, but now Newcastle appear to have a Premier League rival to contend with.
