‘Impressive’: Garth Crooks hails leadership of Everton 23-year-old
Garth Crooks raved about Everton’s Ben Godfrey after his individual performance at the weekend.
Godfrey, who joined last summer for £25million () from Norwich City, has had a strong debut season at Goodison Park.
The 23-year-old defender has shown his versatility by playing across the entire backline during various parts of the season, but in recent months he’s been in his preferred centre-back position.
He’s an aggressive centre-half with a no-nonsense approach to his defender, plus he’s got great athleticism and speed.
BBC pundit Crooks spotted huge leadership from the English youngster in Everton’s 1-0 win away to West Ham on Sunday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side earned three valuable points at the London Stadium on the weekend, which keeps their Premier League season firmly alive as they hunt down a European finish.
“This was an impressive display by Everton at London Stadium and the feature of their game was their defending. Ben Godfrey in particular was impressive,” Crooks wrote for .
“The defender has made something of a name for himself due to his competitive nature but also has an eye for a pass as he showed, sending Dominic Calvert-Lewin on his way to an excellent finish. The ball was brilliant.
“This lad has grown into a proper Premier League defender. I also got the impression that Godfrey was not afraid to take charge of Everton’s defensive responsibilities when Yerry Mina went off through injury.”

TBR’s View:
If you consider it’s only Godfrey’s second full season in the top flight, then he’s got a really exciting future ahead of him.
Everton took a chance on him after he caught the eye in a Norwich team that were relegated in the 2019/20 campaign, and this season he’s made a big impact on Merseyside.
He’s become a nailed-on starter within a competitive Toffees squad, something which very few expected when the season started.
