How important is extending Ander Herrera’s contract for Manchester United?

Having fought off competition from Barcelona earlier this summer, the  claim that Manchestꦇer United are now pressing on with contract tཧalks for midfield boss Ander Herrera.

That is huge news for United given that the Spaniard has only 12 months left on the contract that he originally signed when he joined from Athlet📖ic Bilbao in 2014. Herrera does have a 12 month contract extension clause built into that deal, but the club are expected to reward his fine form witꦕh a pay rise and a new deal this summer.

Herrera has seen his role at Old Trafford go from that of a midfield option to the lynchpin of Jose Mourinho’s debut season. Whilst Paul Pogba was the star in midfield following his signing for £89 million last summer, Herrera’s discipline was key in allowing the Fren🌜chman to shine.

The 27-year-old’s authority proved to be a crucial part of Mourinho’s game plan. Not only did he give Pogba the freedom to roam more freely, but he also broke up play in an effective and abrasive manner. With rarely a bad game all season, he established himself as one of the best that the Premier League has t⛎o offer and was only not selected when suspended or rested ahead of Europa League ties.

With Mourinho on the look-out for midfield additions this summer, it seems likely that he will build his side around Herrera’s dominance in the middle of the park. To do so, it is vital that the club tie down the future of the midfielder, to add stability and avoid the likes of Barcelona🌠 potentially poaching him in the future.

Herrera has become a key player for the Red Devils and a new and improved contract seems a just reward for his fine form in 2016/17. A🅰lready a fan favourite, if he can maintain his current level of performance throughout 2017/18, he could rapidly become one ofꦿ the team’s most important players of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
