‘I’m told’: Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal still want £46m-rated ace, expects him to go

that Arsenal are still interested in signing Renato Sanches – and expects him to leave Lille.

Sanches, 24, has rejuvenated his career in France after slipping down the pecking order at Bayern Munich. It included a poor loan spell at Swansea.

Joining Lille in 2019, the Portugal international was pivotal to Lille stopping PSG from winning Ligue 1 last season. He also enjoyed a strong Euro 2020.

CalcioMercato reported earlier this week that Arsenal are trying to offload Bernd Leno, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah – to sign Sanches.

Romano confirms as much, saying he has been told that Arsenal are still interested in signing Sanches – and that he thinks Sanches will leave Lille.

“He has been on their list a long time. I’m told that he is still a player Arsenal like. He was on the list alongside Houssem Aouar last summer.

“So let’s see if Arsenal decide to jump into this opportunity. Milan are following him. I expect him to leave Lille – now is the time for change.”

Arsenal do have options in the middle of the park. Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are first choice, while Albert Sambi Lokonga is cover.

As is Ainsley Maitland-Niles – while Mo Elneny is well down the pecking order, but the Egyptian is out of contract at the end of the season.

Martin Odegaard is a 10, but can drop deeper as an 8. But what all of Arsenal’s midfield lack is the ability to go past a player, to dribble.

Sanches’ pace and ball-carrying ability is much like that of ex-Tottenham ace Mousa Dembele. If Arsenal can sign him, then they absolutely must.
