‘I’m told’… Anthony Joseph shares the fee Celtic will accept to allow Matt O’Riley’s Parkhead exit
Now that the transfer window is done and dusted, the inquest into Celtic’s lack of incomings will continue for as long as the team continues to underperform on the park.
With all the focus surrounding the lack of incomings, it’s easy to forget that the club did well to fend off interest for one of their star players in the January window.
Matt O’Riley was subject to a bid from Atletico Madrid in January and whilst the club knocked back the loan offer, it seems that the Danish international could be allowed to move on if a club match Celtic’s valuation.
Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph has shared the fee that Celtic would be prepared to accept that will allow the ‘outstanding‘ 23-year-old to leave the club.
Joesph said [], “I thought Celtic would be tested for Matt O’Riley. That happened. Very much tested. This, for me, showed strong resilience from the club.
“They were always in a strong position to keep him in this window. Having just signed a bumper new four-year contract.
“And then Athletico Madrid came in with that loan bid with an obligation to buy for around £20 million. Double what Leeds United were offering in the summer.
“Celtic value him a lot higher than that, and they’d be seeking a record fee I’m told. So you’re talking ballpark at least a starting point of £25m to £30m.
“They insisted he was not for sale in this window there are very strong with that. My understanding is that he was happy to stay.
“My understanding is Celtic are not going to stand in his way of him joining an elite club if the right offer comes in. They just weren’t prepared to sell in this window.”
Matt O’Riley will become Celtic’s record transfer
There is little doubt that O’Riley is highly sought after. Speculation surrounding the 23-year-old has been rife ever since he shone in this season’s Champions League.
Despite not scoring in Europe’s top competition, O’Riley was the best player on the pitch in the 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid and was superb in Celtic’s win over Feyenoord.

The Dane created three assists in the campaign. Although that wasn’t enough to help Celtic progress, his performances raised eyebrows and now he is attracting the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs.
Will Celtic lose O’Riley in the summer window? I guess it all depends on who comes in for him and if the interested parties will match Celtic’s valuation.
If O’Riley continues to shine for club and country, especially with the Euros coming up, I think Celtic will get much, much more than the £25m they got for Kieran Tierney back in 2019.
