‘I’m surprised’… Paul Merson thinks West Ham are about to get rid of a ‘special’ player

Paul Merson has admitted he’s surprised to see West Ham United midfielder Pablo Fornals linked with a move away from the club today.

Pablo Fornals could leave ahead of tonight’s deadline as Real Betis aim to land the Spaniard.

Sky Sports journalist claimed just today that talks between West Ham and Betis are ‘advancing’.

With the La Liga outfit getting closer to West Ham’s valuation, both clubs are hopeful a deal can be struck before the deadline.

And Paul Merson believes West Ham would be getting rid of a ‘special’ player if Fornals leaves today.

Merson thinks Fornals is a ‘special’ player

Speaking on , Merson reacted to news that Betis are in advanced talks to sign Fornals.

“I like him, I think he is a good player,” Merson said. “The Benrahma one makes sense, getting sent off against Bristol City I don’t think the fans were happy with him.

“But Fornals I think is a good player. I’m surprised that other teams haven’t been in, probably because he hasn’t been playing a lot, but I think he’s a special player.”

Fornals has featured 23 times for West Ham this term but has largely struggled for starts in the league.

Yet, the 27-year-old has started in the Hammers’ last two league games. He’s a fan favourite at the London Stadium due to his tireless work-rate and quality on the ball.

It would be a surprise to see Fornals leave today, especially as West Ham don’t seem to have a replacement lined up.

While he hasn’t been at his best this season, he’s proven to be a reliable performer under David Moyes.
