‘I’m surprised’: Former Celtic star reacts to high-profile departure

Simon Donnelly says he’s surprised that Scott Brown will be leaving the club in the summer.

The Celtic captain has been a tremendous servant for the club since arriving from Hibs in 2007, making 612 appearances and winning 22 trophies.

He’ll be moving on soon, however, with a new role coming up next season as player-coach under new Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass at Pittodrie.

While former Parkhead forward Donnelly believes Brown has earned the right to try something else, he insists the 35-year-old could have served a new manager well if he’d remained in Glasgow.

Asked on for his thoughts on Brown’s impending departure, Donnelly replied: “I’m surprised. I think a new manager coming in to Celtic would look to Scott as being somebody that he could work with, and take the club forward.

“I think Scott has been a fantastic player for Celtic and a great captain and leader, and probably deserves the chance to go and do something else.

“I think that’s maybe where he feels it’s a new chapter for him. He can still play, he can dip his toe into the coaching side of it.

“But I think he’ll be a huge miss for Celtic.”

Brown has five Premiership matches remaining, and his last chance of adding to his considerable silverware haul at Celtic comes in the Scottish Cup.

They get their defence of the trophy underway on Saturday night when Falkirk are the guests at Celtic Park in the third round.
