‘I’m pleased’: Howe says Newcastle have an ‘outstanding’ £10m player who’s brilliant in every training session

Eddie Howe has praised Nick Pope ahead of Newcastle United’s home clash with Everton on Wednesday evening.

The game sees Pope go up against his England rival Jordan Pickford, who of course used to play for Newcastle’s biggest rivals Sunderland.

At his before the game, Howe was asked about Pope who has played his part in Newcastle having the Premier League’s best defence so far this season.

He was effusive in his praise and said he would not swap the man he signed from Burnley for this summer for anyone in world football.

Howe on Pope

When asked about Pope, Howe said: “I’m pleased and proud to pick Nick.

“He’s been outstanding since he walked through the door. Every game he gives his all, every training session he’s very professional.

“I would not swap Nick for anybody. He’s proved in his time with us what a capable goalkeeper he is.”

It seems unlikely that Pope will get ahead of Pickford for England by the time of the World Cup unless there is an injury to the Everton man.

That may not go down too well with Newcastle fans, but Pickford is firmly Gareth Southgate’s favourite and Pope made a mistake last time out against Germany.

But Pope could be crucial if Newcastle are to keep a clean sheet against the Toffees, with Newcastle looking to make it back-to-back clean sheets after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United.
