‘I’m delighted’… Manager thinks Tottenham will be so happy with their ‘very talented’ loanee now

Millwall boss Neil Harris has lauded Tottenham Hotspur loanee Japhet Tanganga after the defender netted a late winner against Birmingham yesterday.

Japhet Tanganga appears to be finding his feet at The Den after leaving Tottenham on loan in January.

The 24-year-old was recalled by Ange Postecoglou’s side during the January transfer window after struggling for minutes at Bundesliga side Augsburg.

Despite a shaky start to life in east London, Tanganga seems to be benefiting from a move closer to home.

The defender netted a stoppage-time winner at The Den yesterday to hand The Lions a crucial 1-0 win over Birmingham.

Millwall boss, Neil Harris, was full of praise for the Spurs loanee after the game and believes Tottenham will be happy with his progress so far.

Harris lauds ‘very talented’ Tanganga

Speaking to , Harris discussed Tanganga’s development at Millwall so far after the defender’s heroics on Saturday.

“The reason players go on loan is because they need different experiences or they need minutes,” the Lions boss said. “We’ve got players on loan from clubs and once they come to us, it’s our responsibility to try progress and develop them as players.

“Japh is a very talented footballer and one v one defender and if you come to Millwall, you come for different reasons. Everybody knows that, no one’s stupid in the game.

“Sometimes you’re not going to dominate the ball, you have to have backs to the wall, you’re going to be asked a lot of questions. And if you’re not prepared to do that as a player, don’t come to this football club.

“Japh’s one who, in particular, since I walked in the building, he’s grown in personality in three weeks already. I’ve seen his character change, I’ve seen the confidence in him. He spoke at half-time the other day and I was really delighted with it and the lads said that’s the first time they’ve heard him speak openly in front of the group with passion.

“I’m delighted. If I can help him develop in both penalty areas, give him an experience over the coming months that develops him as a man as well a player, then I think Japh will be happy but I’m sure Spurs will be as well.”

Tanganga’s development had stalled at Spurs after he broke into the side under Jose Mourinho back in January 2020.

The Englishman was out of favour under Antonio Conte and Nuno Espirito Santo, which led to very few opportunities in the first-team.

He also struggled with injuries after making an early impression at Spurs and this move could help the defender get back on track.

That will certainly be the hope for Tanganga and Tottenham. The centre-back is clearly making a decent early impression at Millwall and has netted twice in his last four appearances for the club.
