‘I’m concerned’: Pundit questions Arsenal’s elite status and cites Klopp example
There are questions as to whether Arsenal can still be considered an elite club.
That’s the viewpoint of former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan, with Mikel Arteta’s side currently languishing in mid-table.
Despite a 3-0 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday, the Gunners sit ninth in the Premier League and have endured another frustrating campaign.
Speaking on , Jordan expressed his concern as to their chances of real success under the Spaniard.
Jordan talked about the “metamorphosis” that he saw at Liverpool over Jurgen Klopp’s first few seasons at Anfield, in which he took them from eighth in his first season to fourth by his second, second by his fourth and champions in his fifth, saying: “I’m concerned that I’m not going to see that with Arteta.”
Asked by host Jim White if he still saw Arsenal as an elite club, Jordan responded: “For stature? Yes. For achievement? You can’t, can you.
“But then again, you run the argument that form is temporary, class is permanent. Arsenal are a classy football club in a lot of ways.
“Arsenal won the FA Cup last year so they’ve won a trophy, and the questions are about how they get back to where they need to be, which was rattling the top four with regularity, and they’re quite a way away from that.
Arsenal take on Slavia Prague tonight in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final, with the Czech side having secured a late equaliser in last week’s 1-1 draw at the Emirates.
