‘I’m certain’: Liverpool legend hails Gerrard’s Rangers job and gives Anfield return verdict

Ian Rush believes Steven Gerrard will eventually return to Anfield as manager, but insists the timing has to be right.

The Liverpool legend cited the example of Gerrard’s former England team-mate Frank Lampard, who endured a disappointing return to Chelsea in the dugout after years of success with the club as a player.

While there is no suggestion that Jurgen Klopp will be leaving Anfield any time soon, it has been widely expected since he took on his first managerial role at Ibrox in 2018 that Gerrard would be keen on eventually taking the top job at his former club.

That speculation has intensified considerably in recent weeks thanks to the Englishman landing Rangers’ first top-tier title since 2011, but Rush believes the timing has to be right.

Speaking in , he said: “Hopefully, Jurgen Klopp will be at Liverpool a long time because that means they are doing well.

“One day, I’m certain, he will manage Liverpool, but it’s not going to be tomorrow. I’m certain that managing Liverpool is in his long-term thinking, but management is a learning curve and Stevie is still learning.

“Timing is everything – maybe it was a bit too soon, for instance, for Frank Lampard to leave Derby County for Chelsea.

“I actually thought he did okay, but he still lost his job. You don’t want the same thing to happen to Steven. You have to be careful pushing people too soon.

“Next season it’s about retaining the Scottish Premiership and doing well in Europe,” added Rush.

“If Steven does that, then I think he won’t just be on Liverpool’s managerial wish list.

“He will be on a few.”

Rush enjoyed two spells at Anfield in his playing days either side of a season in Italy with Juventus, winning 19 trophies during his time at the club.
