‘I’m amazed’…Club chairman stunned Man United haven’t hired 49-year-old instead of Dan Ashworth

Manchester United have made their move for Dan Ashworth as the Jim Ratcliffe era begins to take shape ahead of the summer.

United are expected to be busy on and off the field in the next few months with the ultimate aim of putting themselves in the best position possible to attack the summer transfer window.

Of course, part of that has been getting their house in order off the field with some key appointments.

The most high-profile has been the approach for Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth. No deal has been fully agreed yet but Ashworth is expected to move to Old Trafford.

However, speaking on podcast, Peterborough owner and chairman Darragh MacAnthony has expressed his surprise at United not going for Crystal Palace sporting director, Dougie Freedman.

“I’m amazed they didn’t go for Dougie Freedman at Crystal Palace. I know he lives quite close to Alex Ferguson, so I’m amazed they didn’t go for him,” MacAnthony .

As it stands, Newcastle are asking for around £20m to release Ashworth from ‘gardening leave’. Jim Ratcliffe has and it remains to be seen if United will part ways with such figures to get their man.

Dan Ashworth can call on more experience than Dougie Freedman

Dougie Freedman has got experience of being in the job and has done well at Palace, bringing in top signings like Michael Olise, Ebere Eze and Marc Guehi since stepping into the role in 2017.

However, he has remained just with Palace and that’s probably where Dan Ashworth just has the edge over him in Manchester United’s eyes.

His work at Brighton and then the fact he’s gone into Newcastle and helped them grow has made him standout that bit more.

Rest assured, though, Dougie Freedman is highly thought of in football and it would be no surprise to see him get a job at one of the top, top clubs before long.
